On Thursday, the China National Medical Products Administration approved the vaccine. Earlier this month, the United Arab Emirates was the first country in the world to approve the synoform vaccine for public use. Despite lagging behind some other countries in approving the Covid-19 vaccine, China has been conducting final tests for months on three different types of vaccines.
In July, China launched an emergency use program for essential workers and other people at high risk. As of December 15, more than 4.5 million doses had been used in the program. Originally, two products produced by CNBG and one product from Synovac Biotech were used in the program.
China has at least five vaccines in the final stages of the trial. They are produced by Synovac, CNBG Units, Cancino Biology, and the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Chinese President Xi Jinping promised to turn Chinese vaccines into products for the world. The country has already signed major supply agreements with several countries, including Indonesia and Brazil, the most populous countries in Southeast Asia and Latin America, respectively.
In a statement, Pakistan said it had reached an agreement with Sinofarm to buy 1.2 million doses of the vaccine. This is the first time since the outbreak that Pakistan has confirmed the purchase of a vaccine. Pakistani Science and Technology Minister Fawad Hussain wrote on Twitter: “The cabinet has decided to buy 1.2 million doses of the vaccine from Chinese Sinopharmaceuticals at an early stage.” The vaccine will be administered to frontline workers in the first three months of 2021.
