The criminals hacked to death 32-year-old Masudur Rahman Shuvro, general secretary of the Gauripur Upazila Swechchhasebak League of Mymensingh and president of the Gauripur BRDB. Two others were attacked and injured at the time. The injured are being treated at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital in critical condition.
The incident took place in the Pan Mahal area of Madhyabazar city of Gauripur municipality around 10:30 pm on Saturday. The deceased was identified as Babul Miah from the Kalipur area in Shuvro Township. He expected to be nominated by the Awami League for the position of mayor in the next municipal elections.
Gauripur joint coordinator Upazila BNP and Moilakanda Union Parishad (UP) president Riyaduzzaman Riyad were arrested in the incident on Sunday morning. In addition, three other young men named Jahangir, Mujibur and Russell, associates of Riyadh, were arrested in the Kaurat area of Gauripur upazila. The additional superintendent of police, Saker Hossain Siddiqui of the Gauripur Circle in Mymensingh district, confirmed the matter to reporters.
Local witnesses said that Masudur Rahman Shuvro was having tea with four or five associates at Abdur Rahim’s tea shop in Pan Mahal on the day of the incident. At that time, 8 to 10 gunmen got off two autorickshaws onto GNC and suddenly attacked Shuvro. Shuvro then took refuge in a pharmacy in neighboring Masalla Mahal to escape the attackers. There, the assailants hacked him at random and left with serious injuries. Jahangir and Al-Amin, two of Shuvro’s associates, were also injured. After rescuing Shuvro from the scene and taking him to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, the doctor on duty pronounced him dead.
Meanwhile, news of Shuvro’s death created tension in the area. Although there were no adverse incidents during the night due to the intervention of the police, the tension in the area extended from Sunday morning. Protesters blocked several roads in the city to protest the burning of tires. Around 12:30 pm, agitated people attacked and set fire to the residence of the main accused BNP leader, president of the UP in Uttar Bazar.
In this regard, the president of the Gauripur Upazila Swechchhasebak League, Sohail Rana, said: “Last year, at a function marking the anniversary of the martyrdom of Ziaur Rahman, the president of Riyadh confronted Shuvro. So the incident didn’t get very far right away. Since then, Riyadh and Shuvro have disagreed. He added: “Many people think that Riyadh attacked Shuvro with his team and killed him with machetes to satisfy his insistence on being humiliated.”
Gauripur Police Officer in Charge (CO) Borhan Kabir said: “UP President Riyaduzzaman Riyad admitted in police questioning that he was involved in the attack after his arrest. However, it is not clear at this time what caused the killings. The case is pending. After further investigation, the true reason for the murder will be known.
The OC added: ‘Attempts are being made to arrest others. Additional police have been deployed to the area to control the heated situation. Also, the RAB patrol continues.
