The death of 34 people in a motorboat that sank in the Buriganga River near Shyambazar in Dhaka on June 29 last year shook the entire country.
The launch named ML Morning Bird was arriving at Sadarghat with passengers from Munshiganj. It sank into the river near Shyambazar around 9:15 am when it was hit by a Mayur-2 launch.
A video from a CCTV camera from Sadarghat captured the scene of how the small speedboat ‘ML Morning Bird’ sank into the Buriganga in an instant due to the thrust of ‘Mayur-2’, which is many times larger in size.
After viewing the video, the Minister of State for Maritime Transport, Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury, said at the time: “From the way the incident happened, I thought it was planned. It is not an accident, it is murder.”
On the same day, Sadarghat Police Station Deputy Inspector (SI) Mohammad Shamsul filed a lawsuit against seven people, including the owner and captain of the Mayur-2 motorboat, alleging “wrongful death”. During the investigation, the police arrested eight people, including Mosaddeq Hamid Choyad. Later some of them also got bail.
A seven-member investigative committee from the Ministry of Shipping identified nine reasons behind the deaths and recommended 20 points to avoid such incidents in the future.
According to the report, it is ‘certain’ that the Morning Bird drowned due to the impact of the Mayur-2 launch. However, since a case has been made in this incident, it will be found out who is responsible.
