An excessive presence of lead was found in 11 samples of soil and agricultural products from the village of Magura Sadar upazila in Barashia. In such a situation, in order to get rid of deadly lead poisoning, officials from the district livestock department have suggested removing agricultural products from the food list.
Recently, at least 29 head of cattle died from diseases “unknown” in the area. Later, in early December, the administration found an illegal lead pulp factory in the area.
This information was provided by the district’s livestock department at a public awareness meeting held on the Barasia high school grounds Tuesday afternoon.
The District Livestock Department informed the meeting that a lead pulp factory was illegally set up near the brick field in the northern part of Barashia village in the Bagia Union of Magura Sadar. The pulp was made there by melting lead from old batteries. This spreads the poisoning in the atmosphere of the area. As a result, as of December 29, 29 head of cattle died, and the locals showed symptoms of various diseases, including respiratory problems. The factory was later sealed by the administration through a mobile court.
