Former Member of Parliament (MP) from Cox’s Bazar (Ukhia-Teknaf constituency) Abdur Rahman Badi is back in the discussion across the country. Md. He claims to be his father. After a young man named Ishaq complained in court, Badir’s name is now being discussed across the country beyond Cox’s Bazar. After presenting the case, many more serious charges are being raised.
Sufia Khatun, the mother of Ishaq, Badi’s first wife, alleges that Badi forced her to marry a local bricklayer (construction worker) after Ishaq was reported to be pregnant.
Sufia claims that Bodi secretly married her on April 5, 1992, while she was taking refuge in Bodi’s home for security reasons. Later, when the matter came to light, she forcibly married local construction worker Nurul Islam while pregnant. Husband and father-in-law Ezhar Mia aka Ezhar Company (Badir’s father) also threatened to kill Sufia along with their son if they opened their mouths about her marriage (to Badir).
On December 13, Ishaq (28) approached the court claiming his father. He also requested a DNA test to determine the identity of his father. The court learned of the allegations and issued a subpoena against Badir.
According to local sources in Teknaf, there were several burglaries at the home of Sufis living in Aliabad, in the then Teknaf Union, in early 1992. Sufia’s father was in Saudi Arabia at the time. The young Sufia lived with her mother in a house without men. They felt unsafe due to reckless theft.
When the then president of the Teknaf Union, Ezhar Mia (Badir’s father), was informed about the matter, he ordered the Sufis to sell their houses, promising to give them shelter in his home. Sufia’s family also sold the house according to the president’s instructions. Later, Azhar Mia sheltered the Sufis in an abandoned house where the trial was taking place at the Badis’ house.
Sufia claimed that she used to meet and talk to him every day due to his refuge with the Badis. At one point, Badi proposed to her one day. He accepted. She later married Badir on April 5, 1992, according to Muslim custom. Maulvi Abdus Salam, who was working at Badib’s family residential hotel, Niribili, at the time. The doorman of the Ekhlach hotel was the witness of the marriage.
But a few months after the marriage, Badir’s father, Ezhar Mia, found out. Then Isaac entered her womb. Knowing this, Bodi first tried to abort. He threatened to kill her if she did not agree. Badi and her father Ezhar Mia later forcibly married her to a local bricklayer. However, the bricklayer Nurul Islam, who had agreed to marry Sufia, knew nothing of this (about marrying Badir and becoming pregnant).
Sufia’s current husband, Nurul Islam, claims that former MP Badi cheated on her.
He said that Badir’s father, Ezhar Mia, called him one day and said, “I have arranged a girl for you.” I no longer did it because I considered him (the president) as my tutor. Badi was also present at that time. He also asks her to marry Sufia and promises to be by her side forever.
Nurul Islam said: “Two months after the marriage, I found out that my Sufi wife is pregnant.” When asked about this, Sufia told me everything. Later, Sufia tried to commit suicide several times. I never imagined that such a reality would come to the fore. To hide this reality, I fled with my family to Cox’s Bazar and sometimes Chittagong under the threat of Badir.
Both Sufia and Nurul Islam want Ishaq’s paternal identity. Referring to Badi as a fraud, they said: “We have no claim.” I just want Isaac to recognize his father.
Abdur Rahman Badir’s mobile phone received calls and text messages more than once to find out the general situation, but did not respond.
