The thief went to deliver 40,000 square feet of land in the Narayanpur area of Kapasia in Gazipur at midnight last Thursday. As a result, the Kapasia-Sreepur highway was cut off and traffic was stopped on the busiest roads of the two upazilas.
The incident took place in the Daspara area near the Narayanpur Bazar bandit on the Kapasia-Sreepur highway, 3 km west of Kapasia Sadar. The main highway of the Department of Roads and Highways is about 200 feet long, 30 feet wide, and 10 feet deep. 2 bighas of farmland by the side of the road and by the Shitalakshya river. Everything is fine on the front and rear of the road, but suddenly the middle part of the road will cut off on both sides.
Ratan Das of Dasbari on the side of the road said that when he woke up on Friday morning, he saw that the road was about 10 feet deep and that it was broken. Along with them, their farmland has also been given to the river.
Former UP president Mofizuddin said there had been three previous incidents of giving up land in the same location.
The place was first visited in 1986. After a long time, in the second phase, in February 2005, this huge area with roads and a house sank about 15 feet. In the third phase, in February 2017, in the same area, several plants, orchards and paths of about 10 feet will be installed. In 2005, a team of experts from the Department of Anthropology at Dhaka University visited the site. They examined the soil samples and found that there was an excess of peat clay and charcoal deep in the soil. That is why when the water level drops in the dry season, they dry up and create a vacuum and as a result, there is a tendency to give way. At that time, the Department of Geology visited and said that the extraction of sand from the nearby Shitalakshya River resulted in the transfer of the land.
Recently, the Department of Roads and Urban Development built a strong boundary wall on the north side of the highway. But about six months after the construction work was completed, in February of this year, a crack appeared in the middle of the road in that area and about 4 inches could be given. It was later repaired with plaster and the Department of Roads and Urban Development posted signs on both sides of the dangerous road that read “Soil settlement is being monitored.” As a result, the vehicles and pedestrians on this road used to go there carefully. For the fourth time, last Thursday at midnight, the same area, including the highway, will drop about 10 feet.
The defender of the president of Kapasia Upazila Parishad, Amanat Hossain Khan, visited the place after receiving the news.
In this regard, said the executive engineer of the Gazipur Department of Urban Development and Roads, Mohammad Saifuddin, the incident of giving up the road is sad. The road will be repaired quickly knowing the reason for the donation. The highway is expected to temporarily reopen to traffic on Saturday.
