Demonstrations took place in Trishal, Sylhet, Netrokona, Barisal and Mymensingh on Thursday demanding the cancellation of the decision to postpone the ongoing exams of the National University. Agitated students have warned of a nationwide crackdown if their demands are not met next Sunday.
Twenty students were detained in the capital from morning until noon yesterday. However, the police from Shahbagh Police Station released them in the afternoon. Shahbagh Police Station OC Mohammad Mamun Aur Rashid confirmed the matter and said the students had been questioned.
The exams for the second year of the 2019 National University approval and certification course and the exam for other final courses, including the 2017 Master’s final exam, were being taken. Suddenly these tests were postponed last Monday. Then the students started a movement demanding that the exams be completed in March. Meanwhile, university authorities have said that the postponed exam will begin on May 24. However, the students are inflexible in their demands.
Shahbagh Police arrested 10 Shahbagh students around 10:30 am. At this time the students were scattered. Later they took up position in front of the Shahbagh police station with the procession. The students were again dispersed after being chased by the police around 1:15 pm. They then protested on the sidewalk and the sidewalk in front of the Central Mosque of Dhaka University. Motahar Hossain, a student, said: “If the demand is not accepted, the unrest will start across the country next Sunday. It is not a movement against any person or organization; It is a matter of our lives. That is why we are far behind. I can’t find any meaning in such talk about education. ‘
Earlier in the day, students from seven universities affiliated with the University of Dhaka organized a protest sit-in at Nilkhet and Science Laboratory until noon demanding the withdrawal of the suspension order. Subsequently, the Ministry of Education announced that they would continue with their examinations. A group of students from the National University held a protest on Thursday demanding the same.
Students have blocked the human chain, the protest procession and the road in Sylhet demanding the reopening of all educational institutions and the resumption of the postponed exams of the National University in compliance with health regulations. The students have also delivered a memorandum to the Minister of Education with the same demand.
The university suspended in a short time to take the test, schools opened yesterday afternoon, the police took the baton in a procession of students, including the demand for five points. Students from Chittagong University (CU) have organized a human chain protest against the suspension of exams. They carried out a human chain in the Shaheed Minar area of the university at 12 noon yesterday. Later, Bangabandhu began to conduct sit-ins on the premises. However, the movement was suspended until Monday by guarantee of the authorities.
It is known that students from different parts of the country have moved to the university campus after the university authorities announced the date of the exam. Since the room is not open, the students are preparing for the exam by renting a house in the vicinity of the city, including Chittagong City. Suddenly, yesterday morning the decision to postpone the test was announced. The students were angry.
Regarding the postponement of the exam, CU (acting) registrar SM Monirul Islam told Kaler Kanth: “We are not willing to take the exam outside of the government’s decision.”
