The angry students have suspended their agitation by announcing that they will be staying in the residential hall of Jahangirnagar University (JU). Meanwhile, the university administration has once again instructed students to leave the room.
The agitated students told reporters at a press conference at the university’s transportation facility on Tuesday (February 23) at 1 p.m.
Nushin Adiba, a student in group 45 from the Department of Drama and Drama Theory, said: “The administration of the university has accepted most of our demands.” That is why we are suspending all the programs of our movement. However, we will remain in the hallway considering the safety and suffering of the students.
“The university administration has assured us that we will accept all our demands,” said Tabia Islam, a student activist. He promised not to let us stay in the hall. In view of this, we have temporarily suspended the movement. If the university administration breaks its promise, we will restart a movement with ordinary students.
Meanwhile, the university administration has again instructed the students to leave the room after the meeting of the committee that presides over the university at 2 pm.
Professor Motahar Hossain, chairman of the committee that presides over the university, said that all the rectors had left the hall according to the university’s decision. They will explain to the students that they will remain in the hallway until students exit the hall. Optimistic students are respectful of state law. I hope they leave the room out of respect for state law.
On the night of February 19, locals attacked college students during a cricket tournament. At least 40 students and four locals were injured in the attack. At least 11 students are being treated at the hospital in critical condition.
The students demanded the reopening of the university residences, citing a “lack of security” to remain in the local canteens after the attacks and clashes. However, the university administration made it clear that it was not possible to open the room without government direction. After that, when the locks on all the residences were broken, the students entered. However, the administration of the room in question later closed the rooms again.
