Rural arbitrators have been accused of covering up two cases of rape. In addition, they have also collected fines setting the value of the dignity of the two rape victims. The defendants were fined 90,000 taka for raping a student at the madrassa and 80,000 taka for raping a housewife. The Matabbara people executed him with a fine. The two separate rapes took place in the Barashibpur and Jhajar villages of Sherpur upazila in Bogra.
It emerged that on October 4, a seventh-class student from Shibpur Dakhil Madrasa fell asleep in her room at night. At midnight, Chabbir Hasan, son of Abdus Salam from the neighboring village of Ramnagar, entered the girl’s home and raped her. At that time, people came and arrested Shabbir at the scream of the student. Later, Shabbir was arrested at the home of Dabidur Rahman, president of the Garidaha Union in the same town. The next day an arbitration meeting was held at the president’s home. There, through arbitration with a heavy fine, the incident was resolved and his family took Bakhate Chabbir away.
Village Matabbar Abdul Momin, who was present at the arbitration meeting, said that the president and other village Matabbars had tried. Consequently, the accused was charged a fine of 60,000 taka and handed it over to the father of the victim. But it is not among them. The townspeople have done all this. In addition, the remaining Rs 30,000 has been spent in various sectors.
However, the president of the Garidah Union Parishad (UP), Dabibur Rahman, denied the allegations against him, saying the incident took place in his village. I heard that. Also, I have not conducted any arbitration. I wasn’t even present there. So I don’t know much about it.
On the other hand, Helal Uddin, son of neighbor Azizmuddin, entered the house of a day laborer in the village of Jhajar on the night of 1 October and raped his wife. The following day, the Solaiman Ali village elders, Selim Reza, Faruk Hossain, Aziz and Tunu beat the accused rapist several times. But the husband of the raped housewife refused to accept this judgment. Later, the village elders met again and took 60,000 rupees from the rapist and covered up the incident with the rapist’s family.
Sherpur Police Station Inspector (investigation) Abul Kalam Azad said: “I have heard about the incident in Barashibpur village between the two incidents.” They are supposed to go to the police station to file a complaint. If a complaint is received, action will be taken in accordance with the law. Other than this, I am not aware of any other incidents. Then it will be possible to tell the incident later with the investigation.
