Assault-vandalism in the house of the defendant SI in Barisal, an investigation committee is formed

A law school student named Rezaul Karim Reza (30) has died in custody in Barisal. He died at Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital around 12:05 pm on Saturday. Relatives of the deceased have denounced that the Metropolitan Police of Detectives (DB) tortured him before sending him to jail.

The locals protested against the incident with the student’s body. Defendant SI’s home was attacked and vandalized at that time. However, the Barisal Metropolitan Police has formed a three-member committee to investigate the incident, denying the allegations of torture. The deceased has been identified as Younus Munshi, a resident of Hamid Khan Road in the 24th district of Rezaul Nagar and the son of a local businessman. Metropolitan Detective Police SI Mohiuddin Mahi arrested Rezaul in front of his home around 8 p.m. Tuesday. Later, a case was filed against him at the Kotwali Model Police Station around 12pm after recovering 137 grams of cannabis and four narcotic injection vials.

Barisal Central Jail Chief Superintendent Prashant Kumar Banik said Rezaul Karim Reza was detained last Wednesday. He was admitted to the prison hospital due to the illness mentioned in his shipping document and bleeding in his leg. When his condition deteriorated, he was transferred to Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital last Friday.

Hare Krishna Sikder, in charge of the hospital’s emergency department, said jail authorities admitted Rezaul to the men’s surgery unit 1 around 9.35pm on Friday due to bleeding. He died the following night while receiving treatment there.

Demonstration-vandalism with corpses

Meanwhile, locals held a protest on the Dhaka-Kuakata highway in the Sagardi area on Sunday afternoon demanding the trial of Mohiuddin Mahi and other ‘torturer’ policemen. Hundreds of vehicles were stranded on this important highway during the two-hour protest. At one point, they lifted the blockade when others, including the deputy police commissioner (South), assured them justice. Later, the protesters went to the rice field research area of the city’s 24th District and vandalized SI Mohiuddin Mahir’s residence. Additional police officers were deployed there to monitor the situation.

Mia, the deceased’s uncle, told reporters that on the night of the incident, SI Mohiuddin Mahi Rezaul was stranded on the road and wanted to find two drug dealers. When Rezaul said he didn’t know anything at the time, SI Mohiuddin went to his car and came back and said they injected drugs into Rezaul’s pocket and took him away in the car.

Rezaul’s father, Yunus Munshi, said police called around 9 p.m. Friday after his son was abducted, saying that Rezaul had fallen into the bathroom and was injured. He was admitted to the hospital with bleeding in his legs. However, no member of the family was allowed to meet Rezaul. She claimed that her son had been tortured and demanded a proper investigation and trial.

Defendant SI Mohiuddin Mahi said Rezaul was arrested with injections of cannabis and drugs. The next day he was sent to court in good health. He also said there was a drug case against Rezaul before.

Police explanation, investigation committee

The Metropolitan Police of Barisal has explained the incident in an email message. There it was mentioned that initially it was learned that he (the late Rezaul) was already identified as a drug trafficker and drug addict in the area and there had been multiple drug cases against him in the past. He had groin wounds on his left leg. When he began to bleed from the wound on January 1, prison authorities sent him to Shebachim Hospital for treatment. The police have done nothing outside of proper legal process. Preliminary investigations found no evidence of police torture. He appears to have died of heartburn due to excessive bleeding from bodily wounds. Even after this, a three-member committee headed by the Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) was formed to investigate the matter.

When asked about this, Barisal Metropolitan Police (BMP) Commissioner Shahabuddin Khan told reporters that the matter was under investigation as the complaint was reported in the media by the family of the deceased.
