Although the government has allowed merchants to open stores and malls before Eid, many have decided to close their businesses or stores in the public interest to prevent coronavirus infection. However, there are several open markets in Dhaka.
Helal Uddin, president of the Bangladesh Store Owners Association, told UNB that most of the capital’s shopping malls and markets were closed considering the current coronavirus situation in the capital, but the Islampur market in Old Dhaka , Chawkbazar, Keraniganj, Ayesha Market in Jatrabari, Rapa Plaza in Dhanmondi, Dhaka New Super Market A has decided to launch it again since Trpaksa on Sunday. However, most of the capital’s shopping malls and markets, including Gulistan’s busiest market, Bangabazar, Aziz Super Market in Shahbag, Polwell Market in Purana Paltan and Mirpur, will remain closed until Eid, he said.
Previously, the Bashundhara City Shopping Complex, Jamuna Future Park, Dhaka’s newest busiest market, Mouchak, Anarkali market authorities decided not to open their markets.
Meanwhile, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) urged city residents on Thursday to finalize their Eid purchases at the market located less than two kilometers from their respective areas, maintaining the schedule and hygiene standards announced by government.
In addition, the DMP has ordered to install tunnels or automatic disinfection chambers at the entrances of each shopping center and to have a separate temperature measurement system in each store.
Earlier Tuesday, the government allowed merchants to keep stores and malls open for six hours every day from 10 a.m. at 4 p.m. on Sunday (May 10), maintaining health guidelines during the holidays.
The government has extended the general holiday until May 16, as the number of crown cases in the country continues to increase. In addition, it was decided to close all educational institutions in Bangladesh until May 30.
Meanwhile, Health Minister Zahid Malek said Tuesday that the crown infection rate could rise slightly if clothing factories, shopping malls and stores were reopened.
Health experts have also warned that the number of coronavirus cases will increase if stores and malls reopen before Eid.
So far, Bangladesh has confirmed the identification of 13,060 crown patients and the deaths of 214 people.
