The funeral of legendary actor Soumitra Chatterjee has been completed. He was honored with a song of greeting in the evening as announced by the West Bengal state government. Later, the last rites were performed with complete dignity at Keoratala Mahasmashan in Calcutta.
The veteran Bengali film superstar took his last breath on Sunday (November 15) around 12:15 pm while undergoing treatment at Bellevue Hospital in Kolkata.
Soumitra’s body was brought to Rabindra Sadan on Sunday night before the last rites at the Keoratala crematorium. From there he took Keoratala. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Biman Basu, Raj Chakraborty, Dev, Kaushik Sen and many others participated in the last walk.
Soumitra’s body was taken to his Golf Green home in a Bellevue Hospital hearse around 2.30pm. After staying for a while, the technician was taken to the studio at three in the afternoon. Actors, actresses and studio technicians paid their respects there.
Soumitra Chattopadhyay’s body was brought to Rabindra Sadan around 3.30pm. There, prominent people paid tribute to him. After that, the procession to Keoratala Mahasmashan began.
In addition to actors, actresses, politicians, administrative officials, Soumitra Chatterjee’s last trip was attended by many of her fans. He was honored with Rabindra Sangeet and poetry at every step of the procession. After taking him to Keoratala Mahasmashan, everyone paid tribute to him. Then the song is greeted. The last rites of Soumitra Chatterjee were performed with complete dignity.
The veteran actor was admitted to the hospital on October 8 after contracting coronavirus. Subsequently, there were reports of deterioration and improvement in his physical condition. Soumitra was released from Corona. This legend passed away today after overcoming other complex illnesses.
Doctors said Soumitra Chatterjee suffered from multiple Corona ailments. He was diagnosed with prostate cancer. It spread again to the lungs and brain. He also had a urinary tract infection. His body couldn’t fight with so many things in his old age.
Soumitra Chatterjee was born in 1935. He was simultaneously a producer, storyteller, poet, and reciter. He was also a great actor on stage. He began his career as an announcer. Later, in 1959, he got a call for a movie for ‘Apur Sansar’ from Oscar-winning director Satyajit Ray. He entered the world of acting with images. Since then, he has acted in 14 of Ray’s 27 films. The most popular of his characters is ‘Feluda’.
Besides Satyajit, he has worked with timeless producers like Mrinal Sen, Tapan Singh, Ajay Kare. Suchitra Sen, Supriya Devi, Sharmila Tagore, Aparna Sen, Madhavi Mukherjee, Tanuja and many other legendary actresses have been considered his heroines.
The Government of India honored Soumitra Chatterjee with the Padma Bhushan in 2004 and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2012. He was also awarded the Legion of Honor by the French government in 2016. The Government of West Bengal awarded him the ‘Bangabibhushan’ award in the same year. However, Soumitra Chatterjee turned down the award in 2013.
