Dhaka: The government has backed away from the decision to build a deep seaport in Sonadia near Matarbari so as not to upset the balance of natural diversity.
Therefore, the proposal to annul the decision adopted by the Cabinet on January 2, 2012 on the approval of the policy of the ‘Sonadia Deep Seaport Authority Act, 2012’ project has been approved.
The approval came at a virtual cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Monday (August 31).
After the meeting, Cabinet Secretary Khandaker Anwarul Islam told a press conference at the Secretariat that a deep sea port was to be established in Sonadia. The Sonadia Deep Port Authority Act was passed at the cabinet meeting on January 2, 2012.
But later, the government decided that there would be no more seaport in Sonadia. A seaport is being built in Matarbari, very close to Sonadia. If there is another seaport in Sonadia as there has been in Matarbari, much of our natural diversity will be affected. ‘
The cabinet secretary said that when he was recruited into the study, the government decided that there was no need to make seaports damaging the nature of Sonadia. Matarbari is much sweeter.
That is why the proposed repeal of the law was approved, since there is no longer a need for that law. ‘
