Son of former deputy beaten with hammer, arrested 3

Bogra: Bogra Nandigram Upazila, son of MP Yakub Ali. Police arrested three people involved in the beating of Ashiq Iqbal, 48, with a hammer.

Detainee: Md. Laxmikola village of Singra upazila in Natore district. Munnaf Ali, Md. Hannan Ali and Rabiul Islam.

The assailants brutally beat Ashiq Iqbal with a hammer at Ranbagha Hat in upazila around 6:15 pm on Friday. The detainees were sent to jail by the court on Saturday (August 29) at noon.

Ashiq Iqbal’s father, Yaqub Ali, was elected Member of Parliament twice in the Natore-3 (Singra) constituency in 1986 and 1986.

According to police and local sources, Iqbal arrived in the Ranbagha Hat area on Friday night. When he was alone, Munnaf, Hannan, and Rabiul began beating him with hammers and rods. At one point, the attackers crushed Iqbal’s head. Subsequently, the locals in the market went ahead and rescued him in a bloody state and took him to the upazila health complex.

The doctor on duty sent him to Bogra Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital (Shajimek) for better treatment. In this incident, the locals captured the three attackers. Subsequently, the police arrested them and took them to the Nandigram Police Station.

Iqbal’s father, former MP Yaqub Ali, told banglanews that his son Iqbal is willing to run for the post of president of Sukash Union Parishad in the future. The enmity against his son has started because of such desire. And that is why it can be attacked.

He said that he attended the memorial meeting for the martyrs killed on August 15 and 21 organized by the Awami League in Singra upazila on August 28. There, he had a dispute with the leaders of the Awami League and activists from the Sukash Union. Because of this, the general secretary of Sukash Union A’League found him alone in the Ranbagha market on Friday night. Hasmat Ali’s men attacked him.

Nandigram Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Shawkat Kabir told banglanews that three people were arrested with the help of locals in connection with the fight in Ranbagha Hat. Iftekhar Alam, younger brother of the wounded Iqbal Hossain, presented a case to the police station on Friday evening.

He said the three detainees were sent to jail through court on Saturday afternoon and efforts were underway to arrest the remaining defendants.
