Raihan assassination: SMP commissioner transferred amid criticism

Sylhet: The commissioner of the Sylhet Metropolitan Police (SMP), Golam Kibria, has been transferred due to criticism.

On Thursday (October 22), the Department of Public Security of the Interior Ministry issued a circular transferring it by presidential order.

In this notification, the transfer of 16 more police officers from the country was ordered.

Sylhet City Police Additional Deputy Commissioner (Media) BM Ashraf Ullah Taher confirmed the commissioner’s transfer to banglanews, saying that he has come to know such information.

Raihan Uddin, 30, was tortured to death at the Bandarbazar police post in Sylhet on October 11. Four of the seven policemen were fired and three withdrew after the incident. But SI Akbar Hossain Bhuiyan, in charge of the police post, opened the hard drive of the CCTV camera and disappeared.

After his dismissal, the commissioner of the Metropolitan Police (SMP), Golam Kibria, was criticized for not going to the police post and fleeing from Akbar. He was also criticized for going to the late Raihan’s home for four days.

The ongoing turmoil over Raihan’s murder also demanded the resignation of the police commissioner. For these reasons he was transferred.
