After more than six months at sea, a group of about 300 Rohingya finally made it to the Aceh coast in Indonesia. At least 30 people who were with them died during the horrific journey, according to the Middle East-based Al Jazeera.
Munir Kat Ali, head of the village of Ujong Blang, on the northern tip of the Indonesian island of Sumatra, said most of the six Rohingya were women and children. The locals saw them at sea on Monday morning. They then helped the Rohingya group land in the Loksumawe area.
Roni Mahendra, the region’s army chief, said the Rohingya group, which arrived in Indonesia, included 181 women, 102 men and 14 children. At least one of them is in very poor physical condition. They rushed him to a local hospital.
It was not immediately possible to confirm how long these Rohingya have been floating in the sea and what type of ship arrived in Indonesia. However, Indonesian authorities say it is the largest Rohingya group to reach the country so far.
Meanwhile, the UN refugee agency UNHCR has welcomed the incident of saving the lives of the Rohingya upon landing in Indonesia. Indrika Ratwatte, the agency’s director for Asia and the Pacific, said in a statement that the Rohingya group, which had spent more than 200 days at sea, had repeatedly tried to reach the coast but was unsuccessful. Dozens of these refugees have lost their lives on the way.
