A court has sentenced two domestic workers to death in the murder case of the former head of Eden Women’s College Mahfuza Chowdhury Parveen. Dhaka Speedy Trial Court-1 Magistrate Abu Zafar. Kamruzzaman delivered the verdict Sunday afternoon. At the time of the verdict, the judge had given six instructions on how to keep domestic workers at home.

In the directive, the judge said: “Housewives must be careful in keeping domestic workers so that no one else like Mosammat Reshma Akhter and Rita Akhter can get lost.” Therefore, it is very important that residents of the capital and other areas are aware and alert about this.

The judge then issued six directives to retain the maid at the time of the verdict.

1. The housekeeper can keep a close eye on you for 90 days from the date of the appointment so that you do not escape by stealing valuables from the house. If a domestic worker commits a crime, report it to the police station or appropriate social services officer without hurting or hitting him.

2. Detailed information should be taken in case of having a maid. Photographs and CV of the domestic worker should be taken and a copy of them should be sent to the appropriate police station.

3. If there is no CCTV camera at the front door of the house, it should be installed immediately.

4. If a maid employs another maid in a household, then the name and address of that maid must also be reported to the appropriate police station.

5. Domestic worker supply companies must obtain a license and inform the appropriate police station about the activities of that company. If you do not have a license, your activities will have to stop.

. The maid supply company should send the maid’s photograph and resume to the appropriate police station.

According to the murder case documents, Mahfuza Chowdhury was killed on February 11, 2019 at her home on Elephant Road in the capital. The victim’s husband, Ismat Qadir, a former secretary general of the Chhatra League, filed a case with the Gamma New Market Police Station. The police subsequently took into custody domestic workers Swapna and Reshma and two domestic workers, Runu Begum.

Swapna and Reshma have confessed to the murder. On July 21, 2019, the investigating officer on the case, New Market (SI) Police Station Deputy Inspector Alamgir Hossain Majumder, filed a charge sheet against the two domestic workers. According to the charge sheet, the defendant killed Mahfuza by stealing 20 gold ornaments, a Samsung mobile phone and Rs 50,000 from the house.

The investigating officer requested the release of Runu Begum as no complaint was received against him. The court filed charges against the two defendants on February 9 of this year.

Mahfuza Chowdhury was the principal of Eden College from 2009 to 2012.
