The body of Raihan Ahmed, 33, who was tortured in police custody in Sylhet, has been exhumed and subjected to a new autopsy. Four days after the burial, the bodies were exhumed on Thursday morning in the presence of the executive magistrates of the district administration Sajib Ahmed and Mezbah Uddin and officials of the Police Investigation Office (PBI) and taken to the morgue of the Osmani Medical College Hospital for autopsy.
There, a three-member medical board headed by Shamsul Islam, assistant chief professor of forensic medicine at Osmani Medical College, performed an autopsy. The other two members of the medical council are Forensic Professor Debes Poddar and Professor Abdullah Al Helal. After the autopsy, Raihan’s body was reburied at 3 p.m.
After the autopsy, the director of the board, Shamsul Islam, told reporters: “There are many signs of injuries on Raihan’s body. They have beaten him a lot. However, the exact cause of Raihan’s death can be determined after receiving the reports of various examinations.
He further said that the preliminary report of the first phase of Raihan’s autopsy was delivered to PBI yesterday morning. Samples of some chemicals have been sent to the Chittagong laboratory. A full autopsy report will be provided if the results are known.
Meanwhile, SI Akbar Hossain Bhuiyan, who was fired from the Bandarbazar outpost, received a letter from PBI to all immigrants in the country to prevent him from fleeing the country. PBI chief Banaj Kumar Majumder told reporters at PBI headquarters in Dhaka at noon yesterday. At the time, he added, IF Akbar was a fugitive. But you need to investigate the case. So they are trying to find it.
Raihan Ahmed, son of the late Rafiqul Islam from Neharipara in Akhalia of Sylhet city, was arrested by the police at the Bandarbazar outpost last Saturday night. Then brutal torture was carried out for 10 lakhs. While at the outpost, Raihan called home from a police mobile phone and ran to the outpost with money to save him. When his uncle Habibullah went to the outpost, he was informed that Raihan had fallen ill and was sent to Osmani Hospital. There he found Raihan’s body in the morgue.
According to the investigation, Raihan was taken to the Bandarbazar outpost and tortured under the leadership of SI Akbar. According to a police source, Deputy Assistant Inspector (ASI) Ashiq Elahi drove Raihan to the outpost on the night of the incident. At that moment, two officers detained Raihan from two directions. AND IF Akbar tortured. At one point, leaving Raihan at the outpost, the torturer policemen, including Akbar and Ashiq, left. Then a guard officer at the outpost saw Raihan’s frozen body lying around 6 a.m. When he informed Akbar of the matter, they returned to the outpost. At 8:22 a.m., an autorickshaw arrived in front of the port outpost. Exactly 2 minutes later, at 6:24:24, two police officers were seen carrying Raihan on their shoulders in an autorickshaw. He was later taken to the Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital. Raihan was still alive. He died after being transferred to the hospital.
SI Akbar, the main perpetrator of torture, was in police custody until Monday night, the day after the incident. That day, he also faced the investigation team made up of the Sylhet Metropolitan Police. Later, various sources claimed that Akbar had been on the run since that night. But no clear statement from the police was found on the matter.
