The decision to fire him was made after he was convicted in a departmental case, said Deputy Commissioner of Chittagong Metropolitan Police (headquarters) Amir Zafar.

He told bdnews24.com: “Helal was suspended and a departmental case was filed against him after the investigation committee charged him. He was fired after the charges against him in that case were proven.”

Salman Islam Maruf was a tenth grade student at a local school. He also worked as a salesperson at a local market to cover the cost of tuition.

On the night of July 18, police officer SI Helal raided his home in Badamtali’s Bara Masjid alley under the Double Mooring Police Station.

According to Maruf’s relatives, bikes and mobile phones were stolen from Maruf’s home a few days ago. That night, two men came and looked at Maruf’s house. At the time, Maruf called them ‘thieves’.

SI Helal then hit Maruf with the identity of a policeman and tried to take him to the police station and demanded money. Maruf’s mother and sister later detained the police.

The two men who peeked inside the house identified themselves as police sources. And YES Helal, who was with them, wore white clothes.

After the beating, the teenager’s sister Maruf was injured and they were taken to the hospital for a month, after which the police recovered Maruf’s body from the house.

SI Helal withdrew that night to protests from the locals. A three-member investigative committee was formed headed by Deputy Commissioner (West) of Chittagong Municipal Police (CMP), Manzoor Morshed. Four days after the incident, on July 20, the investigation committee presented its report.

The investigation is said to have found evidence that SI Helal went in a white dress and threatened to beat Maruf’s mother and sister and incriminate them with yaba.

The investigation committee recommended the dismissal of SI Helal for presenting a departmental case against him for conducting a search without informing the police station.

Meanwhile, on July 26, Maruf’s mother filed a murder case against SI Helal under the Torture and Death in Custody (Prevention) Act.

The police department’s case report recommended that SI Helal receive “severe punishment” under the rules.
