On the way back to Teknaf from St. Martin, a tourist boat named ‘ST Shaheed Salam’ got stuck in the Bay of Bengal due to an engine failure. There were 205 tourists on board. About three hours later, the ship’s passengers were rescued.

At around 9:30 am on Sunday, the ship with 229 passengers set sail from Teknaf’s Damdamiya Pier to St. Martin. At around 3.30pm, on the way back from St. Martin’s Jetty with 205 tourists, the engine broke down at sea. The ship was scheduled to arrive at Damdamiya Pier in Teknaf at 6pm.

The ship was stranded there for about three hours. Tourists were brought back to St. Martin by speedboat and trawler around 7.30pm, but the ship could not be rescued. Teknaf Upazila Nirbahi (UN) official, Mohammad Saiful Islam, confirmed the information.

Nur Ahmad, president of St. Martin’s UP, said the ship, which was carrying more than 200 tourists from St. Martin’s Jetty to Teknaf around 3:30 p.m., had an engine failure 15 minutes later. Later, the locals rescued the tourists by speedboats and trawlers around 7.30pm and brought them to St. Martin.

Mohammad Karim, Teknaf manager for ST Shaheed Salam Jahaj, said the ship left for St. Martin on Sunday morning with 229 tourists on board. Some passengers spend the night in St. Martin. The ship’s engine broke down on the way back in the afternoon with more than two hundred tourists. Trying to start the engine due to a malfunction.

Teknaf Upazila Nirbahi UN officer Mohammad Saiful Islam said: “I have heard the news that the ship’s engine has broken down. The ship’s authorities have been contacted. Tourists aboard the ship have been instructed to be sent to St. Martin safely.
