A case has been brought against three people, including two boat owners, in connection with the sinking of a boat with 13 passengers in the Padma River in the Harupur Nabganga area of Paba upazila in Rajshahi. The case was brought by Rajshahi Naval Police Officer Shariful Islam at Damkura Police Station at noon on Saturday.
The defendants in the case are the ship’s owner Isa, Milon, and the ferryman Sumon.
The Officer-in-Charge (CO) of the Rajshahi Metropolitan Naval Police, Mehedi Masud, confirmed the matter. He said that life jackets are mandatory for boat trips on the river. But on Friday, the ship’s owners picked up the passengers without wearing life jackets. And for this negligence, a case has been filed on behalf of two owners and an intermediary in the incident of the sinking of the ship.
Meanwhile, 11 people swam back to shore after a boat with 13 passengers sank yesterday afternoon, but two are still missing. The missing are Sadia Islam Soochna, 22, a third-semester BBA student at the American International University Bangladesh (AIUB) in the capital, Dhaka, and Rimon, 14, an eighth-grader. Divers from the fire service have been working to rescue them since the sinking.
Zakir Hossain, Deputy Deputy Director of the Rajshahi Fire and Civil Defense Service, said: At that time the ship sank in the Padma in the Nabaganga area. At that time, 11 passengers made landfall with the help of the local population and swam. The other two are missing. The rescue operation continued until 11 p.m. yesterday. The rescue operation started again at 8 am today. The two missing people were not found until the evening.
Zakir Hossain added: “Two of the rescuers on Friday fell ill. They have been admitted to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital.
Nurunnabi, a diver from the fire service, said: But we are still continuing with the rescue operation. The operation will continue until the two missing persons are found.
MM Masud Parvez, Officer-in-Charge (CO) of the Kashiadanga Police Station in the city, said: “Everyone on the ship is from the same family. His home is in the Kholabana village of the Damkura Police Station in Paba upazila. They went out for a walk. Later they rented a boat and turned the Padma around. Missing Suchna and Rimon are cousins.
