The sources further said that BNP mayoral candidate Swadhin Kumar Kundu is currently a member of the convening committee of Thana BNP together with the organizing secretary of Sherpur Municipal BNP. He was also elected mayor of Sherpur Township once. Regarding this election, Swadhin Kumar Kundu said: “A nomination has been given to compete for the position of mayor as a party.” The rank and file leaders and party workers are on his side. He is optimistic about winning the election.
Regarding the upcoming elections, Shahidul Islam, former Sherpur Thana BNP general secretary and now deputy secretary of the Thana BNP convening committee, said that those who believe in nationalist ideology will never vote for any candidate outside of the BNP decision. As an independent candidate, Alam knows that the impeachment will have no effect on his election campaign.
Voting for the Sherpur Township elections will take place on January 17 next year. Asiya Khatun, a returning assistant officer, said 39 candidates have submitted nomination papers for 9 general councilors in 9 districts of Sherpur municipality, 10 candidates for three reserved districts and 4 candidates for the position of mayor.
