Sheikh Mujib’s March 7 Speech ‘Of Course History’: Fakhrul

Dhaka: Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir commented that Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s speech on March 7, 1971 was “of course history.”

He made the remarks in response to a journalist’s question during an exchange of views with the media at the Lakeshore Hotel in Gulshan on Saturday (February 26) at noon.

Mirza Fakhrul said, we are not only celebrating March 7, we are celebrating March 2, March 3. Why am I doing March 2? On that day, the flag of independent Bangladesh was raised for the first time by Asam Abdur Rob, the then leader of Chhatra Sangram Parishad. We are also doing that, that is part of the story. What are the three dates? Mr. Shahjahan Siraj has read the Declaration of Independence. How can I deny it? Today their political line is different, the political parties may be different but that is the reality, that is part of the story.
In the same way that Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s speech is “History, of course”. Of course, he must be given his honor, his dignity. This does not mean that when you celebrate March 7, you will say that the country has become independent with the March 7 call. Everything will come out of the discussion, out of history, out of all the history books.

Mirza Fakhrul made it clear that we have no desire to belittle anyone and we believe that this should not be the case. In particular, the real truth about freedom must be revealed to all. That is why I emphasize that we are also young at that time, during that war, we have participated in the war, each moment, each time it is shining in front of us. What he said on March 7, what he said on March 2, what he said on March 3, what Maulana Bhasani said on March 9 at Paltan Maidan, are history. At the same time, what Mahbubullah said is also a story.

He said that the announcement made by the martyred president Ziaur Rahman on March 26 that inspired the nation to jump and the entire nation to war is also history. So none of this can be denied.

Accusing the Awami League of dividing the nation, he said: “Unfortunately, after 50 years, we are divided as a nation.” The credit for that goes to the Awami League. From the beginning they have taken the nation for freedom, against freedom, for conscience, against conscience. If the country became independent with the awareness that I will loot democracy, I will loot the government by choosing the night before, I will empty the coffers. I am a writer, an innocent man, you have to send him to jail for the crime he writes and he has to die.

Criticizing digital law, Mirza Fakhrul said, “You journalists are the biggest victims of the digital law that has been created today.” About 400 of you have suffered in various ways, how many have been incarcerated. His photographer Kajal, before the famous international photographer Shahidul Alam, all of them. Sagar-Runi has been killed. His crime is simply writing. My question here is that we did not fight for freedom, so we did not want freedom.

The meeting was chaired by Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku, coordinator of the media committee and chaired by member secretary Shyama Obaid., Atiqur Rahman Ruman, Shairul Kabir Khan, Farzana Sharmin Putul, Yasir Khan, Mahmuda Habiba, Shafiqul Islam, Humayun Kabir, Mir Solaiman Nurul Islam Saju, Babul Talukder and other leaders were present.
