Today there will be a virtual meeting between the Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina, and the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi. Nine memoranda of understanding between the two countries could be signed at the meeting. The meeting started at 11:30 am and can last an hour and a half.
Foreign Minister. AK Abdul Momen said that nine MOUs in various sectors could be signed at the virtual meeting between Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Narendra Modi. At this meeting between the two Prime Ministers, the old Chilahati-Haldibari railway link between Bangladesh and India before 1975 will be reopened after 55 years. It was closed in 1965 during the Indo-Pakistani war.
He added that during the meeting, all major bilateral issues will be raised, including the water exchange in Dhaka, Covid-19 cooperation, killings at the border, the trade deficit, communications, electricity and the Rohingya crisis.
Momen indicated that the issue of sharing the water of the common rivers that flow between the two countries will have priority at the next meeting. Dhaka will propose to bring together the theme of water exchange between the two main rivers Manu, Muhuri, Gomti, Dharla, Dudhkumar, Feni and Teesta in a single framework.
He said Bangladesh will soon propose, even if possible, to convene a meeting of the Joint Rivers Commission (JRC) at the ministerial level next month to build a framework to address the problem of the water exchange of these seven identical rivers.
Momen said that the Surma-Kushiyara project would also be one of the agendas of the ITC meeting. The last ITC meeting was held in New Delhi in 2010, ten years ago.
In response to a question about Teesta’s pending deal, the minister said that the deal had been finalized a long time ago. Even India has signed every page of the agreement.
Noting that Delhi has repeatedly promised to implement the agreement over the past years, he said: “The final agreement has been completed. Now I just wait for the implementation.
Momen said that bilateral cooperation on the issue of the Kovid epidemic could be on the main agenda of the prime minister’s meeting. India has already promised to be the first to supply the covid vaccine to Bangladesh and the meeting is expected to intensify the problem.
Furthermore, Dhaka will call on India to play a major role in resolving the Rohingya crisis at the United Nations. This year, Bangladesh has backed India for a temporary seat on the UN Security Council. “We will tell them that if the Rohingya problem is not solved, there will be uncertainty throughout the region, which will put their investment (from India) in Myanmar at risk,” Momen said. Furthermore, Bangladesh will call on India to take effective measures to stop the killings at the border.
The foreign minister said that the two prime ministers would jointly declare “The Way of Independence.” The road is up to two kilometers at the zero line at Mujibnagar in Meherpur on the western border of Bangladesh. The first government of Bangladesh was sworn in in 1971 at the site of the road. The path will be opened to the people of the two countries.
