Motijheel OC Monir Hossain Mollah Police Station said that due to student protest, the movement of vehicles through Motijheel Shapla Chattar has been stopped since 1.30 pm on Sunday.
He told bdnews24.com: “A group of Motijheel Ideal College students, Motijheel Boys, have taken to the streets demanding justice for rapists. Later, the road was blocked. I still can’t say how long the lockdown will last. “
Hundreds of students joined the protest under the slogan “Movement Against Rape”.
From Shapla Chattar’s position, they are chanting slogans: ‘I have no place for rapists in Golden Bengal’, ‘Wake up, wake up, student society is awake’, ‘We have to fight rapists together’, ‘There is no place for rapists in Bengal in friendship. ‘
Protests have been raging across the country for the past few weeks in protest at recent sexual harassment in different parts of the country, including torture in Noakhali and rape at MC College in Sylhet.
The government has already taken steps to increase the maximum punishment for rape to death in response to demands from various student and human rights groups.
Justice Minister Anisul Haque said the proposal to amend the law will be addressed at a cabinet meeting on Monday.
