Food Minister Sadhan Chandra Majumder gave this information at a meeting of the Standing Parliamentary Committee of the Food Ministry on September 24, according to the minutes of the meeting. The minutes of that meeting were approved on December 30.
During the meeting, the Food Minister said that “5 million OMS cards have been distributed during Corona, of which 6 lakh of fake cards have been found.”
When asked about this, Minister Sadhan Kumar Majumder told bdnews24.com on Wednesday, “The issue of fake 7 lakh cards was discussed at the last meeting. To prevent these irregularities from being repeated, the initiative has been taken. to prepare OMS smart cards through the Information and Communications Technology Department.
“We have brought information from all areas through Excel sheets. The ICT department is making cards. This card will contain all the information including the photo of the cardholder. As a result, no new cards can be issued with the same person’s name or information. “
As the coronavirus infection is increasing in Bangladesh, the government has closed all offices, courts and vehicles in the country since March 26, ordering everyone to stay home with no special needs. As a result, most of the workers were unemployed. The people’s house arrest lasted until May 31.
At that time, the government increased the number of ration cards from 50 lakh to one crore to give 10 rupees per kg of rice to workers through special OMS.

On March 25, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina announced that she would set the price of rice at 30 Tk per kg at the consumer level in the OMS sector at 10 Tk. Later, the Ministry of Food started selling rice at the rate of 10 taka per kg through special OMS.
The rice was sold every Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. A consumer can buy five kg of rice once a week.
But the special activities of OMS were suspended on April 13 because there was a risk that the virus would spread if the rice was sold during the rush hour. In a directive sent to the Deputy Commissioners (DC), it was said that a list of poor and low-income people who do not have a food-friendly program card will be prepared and the card will be given to them at the rate of 10 Tk per kg of special OMS.
During the OMS special, the news of the embezzlement of large amounts of rice by the food department, including the OMS and Food-Friendly programs in different parts of the country, came through the news.
Law enforcement officials detained representatives of various people in these incidents. The government also fired many representatives of local governments for alleged irregularities in the preparation of the list of beneficiaries and embezzlement of programs favorable to food.
The parliamentary standing committee meeting in September also discussed various irregularities at the OMS dealership.
The food minister said: “In accordance with the decision of the committee formed under the supervision of the deputy commissioner, the matter was subsequently reported to the ministry through the concessionaire OMS. The ministry does not have the authority to cancel or designate a concessionaire.
“Irregularities happen in many cases because a person has been an OMS distributor for a long time. In this case, if the people involved are found guilty after the investigation, a new dealer is awarded. “
