Another heroic liberation war fighter passed away within a week. After the death of Sector Commander CR Dutt on August 25, Sector 7 Lieutenant Commander during the War of Liberation left on Saturday morning. Colonel (retired) Abu Osman Chowdhury. Yesterday he took his last breath at the Combined Military Hospital (CMH).
Abu Osman entered CMH last Sunday and was diagnosed with a coronavirus infection. Abu Osman, 64, had suffered from various complications of aging, including heart disease, for a long time. His memory was also disappearing. He died at CMH yesterday morning.
Abu Osman’s janaza was held yesterday at Cantonment Jame mosque after Asr. There is a state of respect for this war hero. Here the President, Prime Minister, Army, Awami League and Sector Commanders Forum paid their respects to him. Later the coffin was covered with the national flag and was buried with full military dignity in the Banani Army Cemetery under the supervision of the Army.

Abu Osman was born on January 1, 1936 in the village of Madnergaon in Faridganj upazila of Chandpur. During the language movement of 1952, as a student at Dhaka College, he joined the procession to break section 144 on February 21 of that year. After earning a BA from Comilla Victoria College, he obtained a post in the Pakistan Army in 1956. In April 1986, he was promoted to Major.
Abu Osman Chowdhury was in charge of Chuadanga as commander of the fourth wing of the East Pakistan Rifles in 1971. On the night of March 25, when the Pakistan Army’s Operation Searchlight began in Dhaka, he received the news while sitting in the Kushtia Circuit House. The next day, on the morning of March 26, he arrived in Chuadanga from Kushtia and declared in rebellion and joined the liberation war with the soldiers under his command. He named the western part of Padma-Meghna “Southwestern Battlefield” and assumed the position of captain. On March 30, the Kushtia district was liberated by an adventurous operation, which wiped out a large Pakistani force. On April 10, the Bangladeshi government appointed him regional commander for the Southwest. When the government cabinet of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh (Mujibnagar government) was formed at Baidyanathtala in Meherpur on April 17, it handed over an honor guard to the cabinet with a platoon of soldiers.
When the battlefield of the liberation war was divided into 11 sectors, he acted as Sector 7 commander. On August 11, Major MA Manzur was appointed sector commander. Abu Osman received the post of Deputy Chief of Staff (Logistics) at Mukti Bahini headquarters in Mujibnagar.
Abu Osman was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Independent Bangladesh Army. Bangabandhu appointed him director of the Army Service Corps (ASC). Subsequently, Abu Osman played an important role in the formation of the 1971 Committee to Eliminate Assassins and Intermediaries to demand the trial of war criminals. At the time of his death he was the senior vice president of the Sector Commanders Forum.
His wife Nazia Khanam also bravely worked to provide food, drink, money and medicine to the families of freedom fighters during the war, protecting weapons and ammunition. After the murder of Bangabandhu, on November 7, 1975, during a military coup, a group attacked his home in Gulshan to assassinate Abu Osman. She survived that day because she was not at home, but her wife Nazia Khanam died.

Although Abu Osman was the Sector Commander in the War of Liberation, he was not officially recognized as the Sector Commander as there was no government bulletin on the matter. He didn’t even get the Bir Uttam title. However, he is generally recognized as a sector commander. When the Awami League government came to power in 1996, he was appointed president of the BJMC. In 2008, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina appointed him Administrator of the Chandpur District Council. He was awarded the Medal of Independence in 2014 for his heroic contribution to the War of Independence. Even after this, he regretted not gaining recognition from the Sector Commander.
