Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has been accused of killing Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi, according to a US intelligence report. Four US officials told Britain’s Reuters news agency. According to the US media CNN, a secret investigation report in Saudi Arabia has also targeted Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
The intelligence report will be released on Thursday, US local time. According to Reuters, the Saudi prince likely approved and ordered the murder of journalist Khashoggi. US officials say the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) played a key role in the report. President Joe Biden also saw the report.
President Biden will speak soon by phone with Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz. The Office of the Director of National Intelligence (DNI) is conducting an investigation into Khashoggi’s murder. The report, produced under former US President Donald Trump, was never published. But the administration of new President Joe Biden has promised to release the report soon.
According to CNN, a secret Saudi Arabian document found that the killers used two private jets in the murder of Khashoggi, which was taken over by the Saudi crown prince and de facto ruler Mohammed bin Salman less than a year ago. Yuvraj was also aware of the use of the two planes.
UN expert Agnes Calamard hopes that the release of the US intelligence report on Khashoggi’s assassination will play an important role in establishing justice. The special envoy for extrajudicial executions believes that through this report it will be possible to find out who is responsible for the murder of Khashogi in 2016. In October 2016, journalist Jamal Khashoggi was brutally murdered at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, Turkey. He was a fierce critic of Prince bin Salman.
Calamard spoke about the report’s release at a panel discussion organized by the Knight Institute of the First Amendment at Columbia University on Wednesday. “If we had more evidence, it would be impossible for the rest of the world to ignore the information that has been provided,” he said. In the interest of accountability and in the interest of American democracy, the DNI report should be published.
Previously, a Calamard investigation report in June 2019 said that there was sufficient credible evidence of Yuvraj’s involvement in Khashoggi’s murder. This needs more research.
