The Chittagong people got a new mayor. Awami League nominee Rezaul Karim Chowdhury won the Chittagong City Corporation (CHC) mayoral election by a large margin.

Rezaul Karim Chowdhury garnered 3.69,248 votes with the ship symbol in the results of 633 out of 635 polling stations on Wednesday (January 28). His main rival, the candidate nominated by the BNP, Dr. Shahadat Hossain obtained 52,489 votes.

The results were released from the results collection and service center established in the city’s MA Aziz Stadium Gymnasium.

Earlier, voting began at 8 a.m. Wednesday and ended at 4 p.m. Then the vote count begins. Two of the 635 polling stations have been closed due to electoral violence. For the first time, the voting of the entire election has been done through EVM.

The total number of voters in Chittagong City Corporation is 19 lakh 37,606 people. Of these, 70,000 are new voters.

The Awami League nominee Rezaul Karim Chowdhury and the BNP nominee for mayor in the Chittagong City Corporation elections. Besides Shahadat Hossain, five other candidates were also competing.

In addition, 162 candidates disputed the position of councilor in 40 general rooms. 56 women candidates were disputed in 14 reserved rooms.
