A court in Dhaka sentenced retired army colonel Shahid Uddin Chowdhury to nine years in prison.

Judge Mohammad Nazrul Islam of the Dhaka Court of Special Judges rendered the verdict on Sunday on charges of tax evasion.

PP Abdullah of the Court of Metropolitan Sessions Judges, processing the case, said: “He has been sentenced to one, three and five years in a case under sections 164, 165 and 16 of the 1974 Income Tax Ordinance, respectively. , for a total of nine years. ” The punishment will continue one by one. “

The verdict in the case, presented by the National Revenue Board, said the defendants had been found guilty of tax evasion, undisclosed income and giving false information.

The testimony of 11 people was taken on behalf of the state in the case. Colonel (retired) Shahid Uddin Chowdhury did not contest the case. He has not had a lawyer since the beginning of the case.

According to the verdict, Shahid Uddin evaded Tk 84 lakh 13 thousand 26 in fiscal year 2014-2015, Tk 9 crore 25 lakh 12 thousand 600 in fiscal year 2016-2017, Tk 6 crore 6 lakh 14 thousand 221 in fiscal year 2016 -2017 and in 2018-2019. You did not file an income tax return even after the notice was issued in the tax year and you committed the crime of income tax evasion by concealing the taxable income.

According to judicial sources, the retired army officer and his wife Farzana Anjum Khan and four other people were sentenced to life imprisonment in a weapons case at the Fourth Special Metropolitan Court in Dhaka on November 10. His wife Farzana is also a fugitive.
