Young cricketer Sajibul Islam Sajib, a reserve member of the U19 World Cup winning team, has committed suicide! According to relatives, he committed suicide by tying a rope around his neck at his home in Durgapur, Rajshahi, late on Saturday night. Sajib’s relatives have claimed that he did this out of frustration at not having a chance at the upcoming Bangabandhu T20 Cup. However, the director of the BCB, Khaled Mahmud Sujan, does not think so.
Tashiqul Islam, the older brother of the deceased, said that his brother Sajib had a great interest in playing cricket since he was young. The family has had to eat a lot of gossip for the game. At one point he was admitted to a cricket academy called ‘Bangla Track’ in Katakhali, Rajshahi, to develop as an established player. Khaled Mahmood Sujan is the executive director and head coach of that cricket academy. Who can’t believe Sajib’s suicide!
Khaled Mahmood Sujan told Kaler Kantho: ‘I cannot believe that a decent and talented boy like Sajib can do such a thing! It bothered me a lot to hear the news. It was the starter and the middle pace. First Division played for Shinepukur. His name was not in the Bangabandhu T20 Cup player draft. So I don’t think he can kill himself over this. ‘
Sajib has played for under teams of 15, 16 and 19. He toured Sri Lanka as a member of the U19 national team. He even has 95-run innings against India. Recently, Sajib Bangabandhu was preparing to play in the T20 Cup. However, there was no chance of getting any teams as their name was not on the player’s draft. It is not yet clear what exactly caused Sajib’s suicide. The police have given permission for the burial of the body after inspecting the place.
