Republic TV of India editor-in-chief arrested

Arnab Goswami, editor-in-chief of the popular Republic TV of India, has been arrested. The incident has been confirmed on the official Twitter page of that television.

Apparently he convinced a 53-year-old interior designer to commit suicide.

According to Anandabazar, Mumbai police arrested him at his home at 8 am on Wednesday. As seen in the video posted on social media, Arnab Goswami is being taken away in a police van.

Trade union ministers such as Prakash Javdekar and Smriti Irani have condemned his arrest.

Anandabazar reports that 53-year-old interior designer Anvay Naik and his mother Kumud Naik committed suicide in May 2016. The suicide note he wrote had the names of two other people besides Arnab Goswami. They are Firoz Sheikh and Nitesh Sarada. They complained in the note that they did not pay 5 crore 40 lakh rupees. He was in financial trouble for not receiving that money. Anbay was the Managing Director of Concord Designers Pvt. Ltd. Anbayer also worked for Republic TV. But Anbayer claimed that the Republic did not pay the money.

There was also a case of incitement to suicide following Anbay’s death. But in 2019 the Raigad police closed the case. But in May this year, Maharashtra Interior Minister Anil Deshmukh sent out a tweet. There he wrote: “Anbay’s daughter complained that the Alibag police did not adequately investigate the problem of not paying Republic TV. I am instructing the CID to re-investigate the case.

Republic TV alleged in its statement that Arnab Goswami was physically assaulted while being taken away.
