The police detained Sabuj Al Sabah, Vice President of the North Chhatra Dhaka Metropolitan League, for questioning in a case of rape of a domestic worker.
Sabuj al-Sabah was arrested at his home in Pirerbagh, Mirpur, on Wednesday night. Another woman, Bibi Fatema alias Jhumur, was arrested on charges of complicity in the rape, Deputy Commissioner of the Mirpur Division (DC) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Mahatab Uddin told NTV Online.
Later, Sabuj Al Sabah and Bibi Fatema aka Jhumur were brought before the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrates Court on Thursday afternoon. The Deputy Inspector of the Mirpur (SI) Model Police Station, Rokhsana Akter Runa, requested pretrial detention. On the other hand, the lawyers for the accused requested bail. Following the hearing, Judge Dhiman Chandra Mandal granted five days of preventive detention to Sabuj Al Sabah and three days to Bibi Fatema alias Jhumur. The matter was confirmed to NTV Online in the afternoon by the General Register Officer (GRO) of the court in question, Abdul Wadud.
In the evening, the investigating officer of the case told NTV Online: “The home of the accused Bibi Fatema alias Jhumur is in Comilla. The applicant originally worked as a domestic worker at the Jhumur home. Speaking of seeing a doctor, Jhumur brought a maid from Comilla to Dhaka on September 26 and stayed at Sabuj Al Sabah’s home. Sabuj Al Sabah’s acquaintance with Jhumur is on social media Facebook. He arrived at the home of Sabuj al-Sabah on the basis of that identity.
Meanwhile, citing the case, police said a case was brought against Sabuj Al Sabah and his girlfriend Jhumur on Wednesday for the rape of a woman. In the case brief, the plaintiff said that in the name of showing him a doctor, the second defendant Bibi Fatema alias Jhumur took him to the home of the first defendant Sabuj Al Sabah in Pirerbagh of Mirpur. Sabuj then took her into a room and raped her.
Prior to Sabuj Al Sabah, he was Vice President of the Chhatra League of the Dhaka Polytechnic Institute. His village house is in the Gopalganj district.
Saidur Rahman Hridoy, general secretary of the Mahanagar Uttar Chhatra League, told NTV Online about Sabuj Al Sabah: “I have heard allegations of rape against Sabuj. We do not want to keep such leaders and workers in the organization. We sent recommendations to the Chhatra Central League for the expulsion of Sabuj Al Sabah.
