The defendant is BGB member Jewel.
It has been alleged that a seventh class girl was raped in the mountain town of Rangamati and the incident was covered up with “5 lakh rupees compensation”. The incident took place at midnight on March 25 at the home of the girl’s aunt in the KK Roy Road area of the city. Four days later, on Sunday (March 26), the incident took place at the office of an NGO working for women’s rights in the Happy Junction area of Banrupa at a cost of Tk 5 lakh. Defendant Jewel Chakma is said to be a member of BGB. Joya who works in the Chuadanga district has come to Rangamati on vacation.
According to the victim, BGB member Jewel Chakma is an uncle. On March 25, he came from Chuadanga to his own rented house on KK Roy Road in Rangamati for his vacation. My uncle was staying in Bilaichhari that day because of his work. After dinner, around 10 p.m. that day, my uncle drank Bell’s sorbet brought from Chuadanga. My cousin and I eat. As soon as I drank, I went to my room and fell asleep. When I woke up around 2 am, I found myself completely naked. After turning on the lights, I see my uncle in the room.
The victim said that the next day she went to see her school teacher next door and opened the matter and informed her parents about the victim. The girl demanded punishment from Jewel for the incident.
School teacher Pratishtha Chakma said: “I went to the field very early in the morning for the big celebrations of Independence Day on the 27th.” When I got home at noon, I heard about the incident from my daughter and called her to find out. The victim is your daughter’s classmate. Later I learned that they have a family settlement. They didn’t tell us anything else.
Defendant Jewel Chakma denied the matter, saying that it was a family matter, that the matter had been resolved in a family manner.
The victim’s mother said the arbitration took place at the office of a private NGO at the Champak Nagar intersection in Rangamati city on Sunday night. In arbitration, Jewel admits her guilt, apologizes to everyone, and takes responsibility for my daughter’s education. It was decided to open a bank account in the girl’s name and pay a total of Tk 5 lakh to Tk 6,000 per month. On the one hand, family members and we are also poor people. So I accepted. What else to do!
Defender Jewel Dewan, officer in charge of the Bangladesh Legal Aid Services Trust (BLAST) in Rangamati, wrote the arbitration papers, according to the victim’s mother.
However, defender Jewel Dewan denied the allegations and said: “Those who work for women’s rights have done it, they have only informed me.” I heard there were female leaders Sugandhi Chakma and Anita Dev Barman. I am not involved in any way.
Sugandhi Chakma, a female leader, said the girl’s family did not agree to bring a case. Since they are both related. We cannot give any solution. We can only show the way. The girl’s grandfather was present there, he was the one who gave the solution, which is that the girl will stay elsewhere and a total of 5 lakh rupees will be paid for the girl’s education at 6,000 rupees per month.
Sucharita Chakma, executive director of Progressive, the NGO whose office has been arbitrated, did not receive a call when asked about the matter.
