The cabinet is scheduled to approve on Monday (12 October) a draft of the “Suppression of Abuse of Women and Children Act 2000”, which provides for the death penalty for rape.

Under the Prevention of Abuse of Women and Children Act, the maximum penalty for rape is now life imprisonment. The government took this step amid a national movement against rape and violence against women and a demand for the death penalty for rapists.
The secretary of the Ministry of Women’s and Children’s Affairs, Kazi Raushan Akhter, is currently in home isolation after contracting Kovid-19. Additional Secretary (Administration Wing) Farida Parveen is performing routine secretarial duties. The Ministry of Women’s and Children’s Affairs will present a draft of the ‘Suppression of Abuse of Women and Children Act, 2000’ at the cabinet meeting on Monday.
A virtual cabinet meeting will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, according to the cabinet division. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will chair the meeting and will be connected by video conference from Ganobhaban. Ministers and ministers of state of the secretariat will participate.
Last Thursday (October 8), the Minister of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, Anisul Haque, told Jago News: “A proposal to amend the 2000 Prevention of Abuse of Women and Children Act will be presented at the next meeting. of the cabinet. Basically, section 9 (1) of the law is being modified. In this section, the punishment for rape will increase from life imprisonment to death. Small changes are also being made in some other places in this law.
The law minister also said that the initiative to amend the law was taken under the leadership of the Prime Minister.
Article 9 (1) of the Law for the Suppression of Abuse of Women and Children 2000 states: “If a man rapes a woman or a child, he will be punished with life imprisonment and also a fine.”
Recently, rape incidents are taking place in different parts of the country. Meanwhile, on October 4, a video of a 38-year-old woman being tortured in Noakhali went viral on social media. However, the incident took place in the Eklashpur Union of Begumganj Upazila in early September.
The incident went viral and sparked a storm of criticism across the country. Most of those involved were arrested by the police.
There has been a storm of protests across the country, including the capital, against rape and violence against women. The protesters have demanded the death penalty for rapists.
A long march in front of the Shahbagh National Museum was announced on Friday afternoon (October 9) to protest the ongoing rape and impunity across the country.
According to the announcement made at the general assembly organized under the slogan ‘Bangladesh Against Rape and Injustice’, a long march to Noakhali was announced on October 16 and 17. In addition, a nine-point lawsuit was announced for the trial for rape and oppression and removal of the interior minister.
