Dhaka: The government has taken steps to amend a law to make the death penalty the maximum punishment for rape.
Justice Minister Anisul Haque told reporters Thursday that the draft “Law for the Suppression of Abuse of Women and Children, 2000” was sent to the cabinet for approval.
The law minister also said that the ministry has taken this initiative to amend the law after the directive of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
According to the Law on Prevention of Abuse of Women and Children, the maximum punishment for rape is life imprisonment.
The government has taken steps to increase the death penalty for rapists in recent days, following a series of rapes in the country.
The justice minister told reporters: “A proposal to amend the 2000 Prevention of Abuse of Women and Children Act will be presented at the next cabinet meeting.”
He said that section 9 (1) of the law is being modified. “Under this section, the punishment for rape will increase from life imprisonment to death,” he said. “
The justice minister said small changes were also being made in some other places in the law.
