The victim’s housewife has issued a statement in court stating that her husband was detained in the dormitory of Murarichand (MC) College in Sylhet. She testified under Section 22 of the Suppression of Abuse of Women and Children Act in the Sylhet Sharmin Khanam Nilar Metropolitan Magistrate’s court on Sunday noon.
The Sylhet Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner (prosecution), Amulya Kumar Chowdhury, confirmed this. He said police took the housewife from Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital to the Sylhet Chief Metropolitan Magistrates Court this afternoon. The victim’s housewife then testified in court at around 1:30 p.m.
Earlier today, the police arrested Saifur Rahman, the main defendant in the gang rape case, of Sunamganj and Arjun Laskar, defendant number 4, of Habiganj. Saifur Rahman was arrested this morning in Chhatak upazila from Sunamganj and Arjun Laskar from Mantala area in Madhabpur upazila from Habiganj around 10:30 am.
Chhatak Circle (ASP) Deputy Superintendent of Police Billal Hossain confirmed Saifur’s arrest. On the other hand, the police superintendent of the Sylhet (SP) district Farid Uddin has confirmed the arrest of Arjun Lashkar.
Regarding Saifur’s arrest, ASP Billal Hossain said that the arrested Saifur Rahman is a resident of Chandaipara in Balaganj upazila de Sylhet. He is the main defendant in the gang rape case. There are also gun cases against him.
The housewife’s husband became the plaintiff in the case on Saturday, citing the names of six people and filing a case charging three other unidentified people. The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of the Sylhet Metropolitan Police (SMP) of Shah Paran Police Station, Abdul Qayyum, confirmed the matter.
The defendants in the case are Saifur Rahman (26), Shah Mohammad. Mahbubur Rahman Rony (25), Tareq (26), Arjun Laskar (25), Rabiul Islam (25) and Mahfuzur Rahman Mashum (25). Among them, Saifur Rahman is a resident of Balaganj upazila, Rony’s house is in Habiganj, Tareq is a resident of Jagannathpur upazila of Sunamganj, Arjun’s house is in Zakiganj of Sylhet, Rabiul’s house is in Dirai upazila of Sunamganj and the house of Mahfuzilat Sadar Mâdar Mâdar in Sylzheuztur Rahman is.
The six defendants in the case have been alleged to be BCL activists. In this regard, said OC Abdul Qayyum, six people have been accused of being directly involved in the case. However, the case statement did not mention them as BCL activists. The other three have been charged with complicity.
The police recovered firearms from the room of the defendant M Saifur Rahman. A firearm, four battering rams, a knife, and a GI pipe were recovered from Saifur’s room around 3 p.m. Friday.
It was learned that the housewife went to MC College last Friday night to visit her husband. At that time, five to six people from the college campus were forcibly taken to the college dorm. They gang-raped the girl while keeping her husband in a room there. Later, the girl was admitted to the Comprehensive Crisis Center (OCC) of the Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital.
