Rape at MC College: All defendants in the statement were arrested

When the matter came to light after the gang rape in the dormitory at Murarichand College in Sylhet on Friday night, those involved fled the dormitory shortly after 9 p.m. They were identified that night and six people named, but no arrests were made the following Saturday.

However, the defendants in the case have been detained one by one since Sunday morning. Police were able to arrest all six defendants in the statement Tuesday night.

Following preliminary questioning of the detainees, law enforcement officers detained two more defendants after confirming their involvement in the incident.

The girl’s husband filed a case under the Prevention of Abuse of Women and Children Act at the Shahparan Police Station around 3:15 p.m. on Friday (September 25) after the gang rape incident.

The defendants in the case are Saifur Rahman (28) from the village of Chandaipara in Balaganj upazila de Sylhet, Tarekul Islam Tarek (28), a resident of the Umednagar Nisarg area of ​​the municipal city of Sunamganj, Shah Mohammad from Bagunipara in Habiganj Sadar upazila. Mahbubur Rahman Rony (25), Arjun Laskar (25) from Atgram in Zakiganj upazila de Sylhet, Rabiul Islam (25) from Barangadipur village in Dirai upazila from Sunamganj and Mahfuzur Rahman Masum (25) from Gachbari village in Kanaighat de Sylhet.

There are also 2-3 other anonymous defendants in the case. All of the defendants are former and current Murarichand College students and Chhatra League activists.

The way the arrest

Following the case, law enforcement tracked various sources, information, mobile phone calls, and locations to identify their location and make arrests.

Police arrested Saifur Rahman, the first defendant in the case, from Chhatak upazila of Sunamganj on Sunday morning. Saifur is also charged in a weapons case recovered from the caretaker’s bedroom.

After that, the police arrested Arjun Laskar from the Mantala area bordering Madhabpur upazila of Habiganj.

The defendant Shah Mohammad Mahbubur Rahman Rony was arrested in Habiganj Sadar in a Rapid Action Battalion operation that night.

When Rony was questioned, he gave information that the two suspects in the case Rajan Mia and Md. De Fenchuganj Upazila de Sylhet that night. RAB arrested Ainuddin.

Their involvement was later confirmed and they were shown in custody Monday morning as an unidentified defendant in the case.

Police arrested Mahfuzur Rahman Masum, the sixth defendant in the case, from the Haripur area of ​​Jaintapur upazila in Sylhet on Monday night.

The RAB arrested Tarekul Islam, the second defendant in the case, from Dirai upazila of Sunamganj on Tuesday night.

Meanwhile, the court referred six defendants in the case over five days yesterday and today. The rest of the defendants will appear in court tomorrow.

Sylhet Metropolitan Police Additional Deputy Commissioner (Media) Jyotirmoy Sarkar told The Daily Star: “The arrest of all the defendants in the case has ended with the arrest of Tareq. Two other defendants involved in the incident have also been identified and arrested. If someone else is known to be involved in the questioning of the accused, they will also be arrested as soon as possible.
