Sylhet Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court Judge Tuesday at noon. Abul Kashem granted the pre-trial detention, said Khaled Uz Zaman, special superintendent of police in Sylhet from the Bureau of Investigation (PBI), the investigating agency in the case.
He said SI Akbar was brought to court and held in pre-trial detention for seven days by the investigating officer on the case, Inspector Awlad Hossain from PBI Sylhet. The court granted preventive detention for seven days after the hearing.
He was later taken to the PBI Sylhet office for questioning under strict security measures.
SI Akbar Hossain Bhuiyan was arrested in the Dona border area of the Laxmiprasad union in Sylhet’s Kanaighat upazila at noon on Monday, police said.
He was taken to the Sylhet Super Police Office from Kanaighat that night. Police Superintendent at night. Farid Uddin told a press conference in his office that SI Akbar had been arrested in the Kanaighat border area through “some close friends” of the police.
It was delivered to PBI around 8:45 p.m.
Previously, PBI detained Titu Chandra Das, another policeman from the Bandar Bazar Police Outpost, on the same charge and detained him for five days.
So far, four policemen, including SI Akbar, have been arrested in the Raihan murder case. Among them, police officers Titu Chandra Das, Harunur Rashid were sent to jail for eight days in two phases and ASI Ashek Elahi was sent to jail after a five-day pre-trial detention.
Five people, including SI Akbar and Hasan Uddin, in charge of the Bandar Bazar outpost, were suspended and three others were removed in connection with Raihan’s assassination.
Raihan Ahmed, a resident of the Akhalia area in the city of Sylhet, was taken to the Bandarbazar police post on the morning of October 11 and tortured. He later died at Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital.
Raihan’s wife, Tahmina Akhter Tanni, filed a murder case at the Kotwali police station on October 12.
