A rape and weapons case has been filed in connection with the rape of a dormitory at the traditional Murarichand (MC) College in Sylhet last night.
The incident took place on Friday night.
Sylhet Metropolitan Police Additional Deputy Commissioner Jyotirmoy Sarkar told the Daily Star last night: “The rape victim’s husband has brought a case in which he names six people and a few more.”
The case names Saifur Rahman, Shah Mahbubur Rahman Rony, Arjun Laskar, Mahfuzur Rahman Masum, Tareq Ahmed and Rabiul Islam.
Among them, Saifur, Mahbubur, Arjun and Mahfuzur are university students and Tareq and Rabiul are known to be outsiders.
Several university students have confirmed that they are Bangladeshi Chhatra League workers. However, as there is no BCL committee in the Sylhet district, the metropolis and the university, they are not in any position.
Shahporan Police Officer in Charge (CO) Abdul Qayyum told The Daily Star: During the night, the police brought a case against Saifur Rahman.
Police recovered a pistol, four sharp weapons and some iron bars from a room assigned to the dormitory superintendent during the raid. Police said the room was occupied by the Chhatra League.
Citing the case, the OC said the girl was traveling in a private car with her husband around 8 pm last night when some young men took her to the college dormitory. There, her husband was tied up and the girl was raped by some people.
Additional Deputy Commissioner Jyotirmoy Sarkar said: “The girl and her husband were rescued around 12 pm after receiving the news. The girl has been admitted to the One-Stop Crisis Center at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College.
He added: ‘The defendants are fugitives. The police operation to catch them continues.
It has been alleged that some local leaders of the Awami League tried to resolve the incident. Because of this, the rescue of the victims was delayed for about two hours and the defendants had the opportunity to escape.
Police have denied the allegations.
Although the university and dormitory were declared closed due to the Corona epidemic, the BCL workers were still there.
The head of the university, Saleh Ahmed, told The Daily Star: ‘None of them are current students at the university. They passed out a few years ago.
