On Wednesday, Uttar Pradesh state police stopped a convoy of a congressional delegation that included Rahul Gandhi and his sister Priyanka Gandhi Bhadra in Greater Noida on their way to Hathras from Delhi. From there, Rahul and Priyanka tried to walk with local Congressional leaders, but the police stopped them again.

In the face of obstacles, leaders and supporters of Congress sat in the streets. At this stage, the police began to beat him with sticks and at one point pushed Rahul and threw him to the ground. He was later arrested.

After temporarily detaining Rahul, the police released him. His sister Priyanka Gandhi was also released by the police, NDTV reported.

Rahul and Priyanka had previously announced that they would go to Hathras. But the Uttar Pradesh government issued section 144 there. Even then, Congressional leaders did not cancel the program and left with a convoy.

Uttar Pradesh police said the state was under control due to the coronavirus, which is why the Rahul convoy was stopped.

Hathras District Commissioner P Laskar told ANI that the district boundaries had been sealed and that section 144 had been imposed in the area to avoid “unpleasant situations”.

He also said that they knew nothing about Rahul and Priyanka’s visit.

The body of a young woman who died in a hospital after being gang-raped and tortured in Hathras, Uttar Pradesh, India, was reportedly burned by police officers without the consent of her relatives.

There has been intense anger throughout India over this. Opposition parties have been protesting in various parts of India in the wake of the incident.
