On Wednesday, Uttar Pradesh state police stopped a convoy of a congressional delegation that included Rahul Gandhi and his sister Priyanka Gandhi Bhadra in Greater Noida on their way to Hathras from Delhi. From here, Rahul and Priyanka tried to walk with local congressional leaders but were stopped by the police.
At that time, the police started arguing with Rahul, according to Indian media.
According to Anandabazar, the police officer on duty told Rahul: “You are violating section 144.”
In response, Rahul said, “You are abusing section 144.”
Faced with police obstruction, the leaders and supporters of Congress took to the streets. At this stage, the police began to beat him with sticks and at one point pushed Rahul and threw him to the ground. He was later arrested.
“Why are you arresting me? Why crime? Please tell the media, ”Rahul told police in a heated discussion.
Video footage from the media showed the congressional leader trying to resist the police trying to stop him, but fell when the police pushed him.
Rahul Gandhi said: “Right now the police pushed me, beat me with sticks and threw me to the ground. I want to ask, can only Modi walk in this country? Can’t ordinary people walk?
Rahul and Priyanka had previously announced that they would go to Hathras. But the Uttar Pradesh government issued section 144 there. Even then, Congressional leaders did not cancel the program and left with a convoy.
Uttar Pradesh police said the state was under control due to the coronavirus, which is why the Rahul convoy was stopped.
Hathras District Commissioner P Laskar told ANI that the district boundaries had been sealed and that section 144 had been imposed in the area to avoid “unpleasant situations”.
He also said that they knew nothing about Rahul and Priyanka’s visit.
