Zillur Rahman Chowdhury, alias Jilani, a resident of the Chauara area in the 25th district of Comilla City Corporation and a candidate for councilor in the city’s last corporate election, has been shot and killed. The incident took place in front of the Funka brick kiln around 7.30am on Wednesday.
The deceased was identified as Zillur Rahman Chowdhury, vice president of the Comilla Metropolitan Awami League. She was known as a follower of Anjuman Sultana, a deputy from the seat reserved for women.
According to police and local sources, Zillur was taking his daughter to a private guardian this morning. On the way, a group of criminals stopped him and stabbed him in the arms and legs with sharp weapons. At that time, people in the area rescued him and took him to Comilla Medical College Hospital. The doctor on duty at the hospital declared him dead.
Sadar South Model Police Station Inspector Kamal Kanti Dhar said the Juba League leader was beaten to death. Police are investigating the matter.
Tapash Pal, a close associate of the deputy, said that Zillur Rahman Chowdhury was elected from District 25 in the Comilla City Corporation election on March 30, 2016. He was also a possible candidate for councilor in the upcoming election. He claimed that his political opponent had killed him. He demanded justice for this murder.
