Russian President Vladimir Putin has vowed to remove former Russian presidents for life.

Al Jazeera reports that the Russian parliament on Tuesday passed a bill granting life in prison for any crime.

Now all that remains is formality. Once Putin signs the bill, it will become law. The bill is part of an amendment to the Russian constitution.

The amended constitution was approved by a national vote this summer. That vote paved the way for six-year-old President Putin to remain in power in Russia until 2038.

The bill would give former presidents a lifetime seat on the Federation Council or the Senate. Even if he leaves the presidency, he will be saved from justice.

The law was passed in the lower house of the Russian parliament, the Duma, on Tuesday.

He said former presidents and their families would be acquitted for life if they committed any crime in their lifetime.

The new bill would prohibit police or investigators from questioning former presidents.

Vladimir Putin has been president of Russia for four terms. He was in power for 6 years in the first two terms.

After winning the 2012 elections, he amended the constitution and made the term of parliament 6 years. His fourth term will end in 2024.

Putin has amended the constitution to stay in power for another 16 years. As a result, Putin’s wish to stay in power until 2038 is being fulfilled.
