The government is scheduled to announce a week-long lockdown starting Monday (April 5), as coronavirus infections continue to rise at an alarming rate.
The Additional Secretary of the Cabinet Division said: ‘The proposal to declare a closure has been sent to the Honorable Prime Minister. If you approve, a notification will be issued.
He further stated: “Previously, a virtual meeting was held under the chairmanship of the Cabinet Secretary (Khandaker Anwarul Islam). Present at the meeting were the Chief Secretary, concerned senior secretaries, top law enforcement officials, officials from the health department and many others.
A cabinet department official, who did not want to be named, said: “I don’t see any possibility of issuing a notice today. Tomorrow (Sunday) may be morning. Even then it cannot be said that we are in the office for this.” .
Early in the morning, the Minister of Road Transport and Bridges and Secretary General of the Awami League, Obaidul Quader, announced the closure at a press conference at his official residence.
Later, the Minister of State for Public Administration, Farhad Hossain, told Jago News that all kinds of governmental and non-governmental organizations, except emergency services, would remain closed during the shutdown. However, the factory will remain open in accordance with hygiene standards.
