Professor Anisuzzaman was born on February 16, 1936 in Calcutta, West Bengal, India. Her father, ATM Moazzem, was a renowned homeopath. Although mother Syeda Khatun was a housewife, she had a hand in writing. Grandfather Sheikh Abdur Rahim was a writer and journalist. Anisuzzaman was the fourth of five brothers. He is survived by his wife Siddika Zaman, his two daughters Ruchita Zaman, Shuchita Zaman, his son Anand Zaman and many others.
Anisuzzaman began her education at Park Circus High School in Kolkata. He studied there until the seventh class. After the partition, he attended the Khulna Zilla School and then the Priyanath High School in Dhaka (now the Nawabpur Government High School). He passed Priyanath High School in 1951 and Jagannath College Upper Secondary in 1953. He then graduated from Dhaka University in 1956 with a degree in Bengali language and literature and in 1958 became the first to graduate from the former class. He later obtained his doctorate for his research on “Thoughts of Bengali Muslims in Bengali literature during the English period” (1857-1918). He also obtained a postdoctoral degree in 1958 from the University of Chicago in “Nineteenth-century Bengal Cultural History, Young and Contemporary Bengal”.
He began his professional life teaching at Dhaka University in 1959. Then, in 1979, he joined Chittagong University as a junior reader. When the liberation war broke out in 1971, he went to India and became secretary general of the Bangladesh Teachers Association, an organization of refugee teachers. He joined the Bangladesh Government Planning Commission formed during the war.
After the country became independent in 1972. He was a member of the National Education Commission headed by Kudrat-e-Khuda. In 1974-75 he studied at the University of London School of Oriental and African Studies as a staff member of the Commonwealth Academy. In 1965 he joined the University of Dhaka as a professor. After retiring in 2003, he joined as an overtime teacher.
On June 19, 2016, the government appointed him a national teacher. Most recently, he was president of the Bangla Academy. He was associated with the literary magazine ‘Kali O Kalom’.
Awards and books
National professor Anisuzzaman has received many awards and distinctions at home and abroad. He received the ‘Ekushey Padak’ in 1975, the ‘Swadhinata Puraskar’ in 2015 and the Bangla Sahitya Puraskar Academy in 1970. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan by the government of India. Apart from this, he has twice received many medals and honors at home and abroad, including ‘Ananda Puraskar’ from ‘Anandabazar Patrika’, ‘D-Litt’ from Rabindranath Tagore University and ‘Jagattarini’ Medal from the University of Calcutta
He has written and edited over a hundred books. Notable books include “Muslim Manas and Bengali Literature”, “In Search of Swarup”, “Old Bengali Prose”, “18th Century Bengali Letters”, “Kalnirbadhi”, “Bipula Prithibi”, “Amar Ekattar”, etc.
