The ‘Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission Bill (Amendment) -2020’ was passed with the opportunity to increase the price of electricity and fuel more than once a year. The Minister of State for Energy, Energy and Mineral Resources, Nasrul Hamid, presented a motion in the National Assembly on Wednesday (November 18) evening to pass the bill, which was approved by voice vote.

The bill was presented to parliament on June 23. Associate attorney. Fazle Rabbi Mia chaired the session.

The bill establishes that the rates set by the Commission may be modified one or more times in any financial year by a single or separate order from the Commission, as necessary. Under the provision, if the new law goes into effect, the Energy Regulatory Commission may change the price of fuels, including electricity, gas, diesel and gasoline, once a year or more.

Regarding the purpose and reasons for the bill, the minister of state said the law needs to be amended due to recent rapid changes in the fuel supply structure.

Jatiya Party MP before the bill was passed in session. Fakhrul Imam, Shamim Haider Patwari and Pir Fazlur Rahman opposed BNP Barrister Rumin Farhana’s bill and proposed sending the bill to the Public Opinion Verification and Selection Committee. However, the proposal was rejected by oral vote.

There was a provision in existing law enacted in 2003 that the rate set by the Commission could not be changed more than once in any financial year unless there was some other change, including a change in the price of fuel. The bill was approved by the cabinet in December last year with the opportunity to change the price more than once.
