In the biannual election of the National Press Club’s steering committee, the Liberation War Journalists Forum has won a majority of 11 seats, including president, vice president, two assistant secretaries and treasurer. On the other hand, BNP supporters have gained 6 positions, including senior vice president and general secretary.

Farida Yasmin de Ittefaq has been elected President and Ilias Khan from my country has been elected Secretary General. Farida Yasmin got 571 votes, while her closest rival Kamal Uddin Sabuj of BSS got 395 votes. As a result, a woman was elected to the highest position on the management committee in the press club’s six-year history.

Ilias Khan obtained 57 votes for the post of general secretary. His closest rival Omar Farooq of BSS got 393 votes.

Senior journalist Mostafa-i-Jamil, chairman of the electoral steering committee, announced the results on Thursday night. Present on the occasion were Jafar Iqbal, Mostafizur Rahman, SM Shawkat Hossain, Gautam Arindam Barua (Shelu Barua), Shamima Chowdhury and Moniruzzaman Tipu.

Voting for 18 seats on the executive committee took place uninterrupted from 9 am to 5 pm in the auditorium of the Press Club. One thousand of the 1,151 voters cast their vote in the election.

In response to club members after the results were announced, newly elected president Farida Yasmin said that the club’s development activities would continue. I want everyone’s cooperation for this.

Following the announcement of the results, the winners of newly elected President Farida Yasmin’s Liberation War Consciousness Journalists Forum paid tribute to the father of the nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman with flowers at the entrance to the main building of the Press Club.

41 candidates competed for 16 executive council positions, including president-general secretary. The two panels in full competition were the Awami League-backed Farida Yasmin-Omar Farooq panel and the pro-BNP panels Kamal Uddin Sabuj and Ilias Khan. In addition, 6 more independent candidates participated in the election for different club positions.

The other winners are: Senior Vice President Hasan Hafeez got 413 votes, his closest rival Azizul Islam Bhuiyan got 36 votes. Vice President Rezwanul Haque Raja got 615 votes, while his closest rival, Khandaker Hasnat Karim, got 340 votes. Mainul Alam got 57 votes and Ashraf Ali got 395 votes for the two deputy secretary positions. His closest rival, Nazmul Ahsan, got 315 votes and independent candidate Kalyan Saha got 252 votes. Shahed Chowdhury obtained a maximum of 607 votes for the treasurer position. His closest rival, Saladin Ahmad Bablu, got 26 votes.

Additionally, the winners of 10 memberships are Ayub Bhuiyan (544), Rezanur Rahman (484), Kazi Raunak Hossain (455), Zahiduzzaman Faruk (443), Shahnaz Begum Polly (430), Syed Abdal Ahmed (421), Shahnaz Siddiqui 420 ), Bhanuranjan Chakraborty (411), Rahman Mustafiz (369) and Bakhtiyar Rana (38). Among them, Kazi Rawnak Hossain, Shahnaz Begum Polly, Syed Abdal Ahmed and Bakhtiyar Rana won from the pro-BNP panel and others from the Liberation War Consciousness Forum panel.
