This year, the ‘Christmas Eve Mass’ is not celebrated in the main part of St. Peter’s Basilica, but in a part of the back. Less than 100 people participated in the event. Typically, more than ten thousand people participate in Christmas ‘Mass’ each year. Among them are diplomats from about two hundred countries.

This time the ‘mass’ began two hours before the scheduled time. So that those who are participating in ‘Masse’ can return home before the start of the curfew at 10 pm local time.

In a Christmas message Thursday night, the Pope said: “The very Son of God was born among the poor and the marginalized. By that he means that the marginalized are also children of God.

“God came to us through poverty and need and said, ‘Only by serving the poor can we show our love for God.’

Italy has imposed a nationwide lockdown during the Christmas and New Year holidays. All non-emergency stores have been declared closed from December 24 to 26, December 31 to January 3, and January 5 and 6. People will only be able to go to work and leave home at that time for health and emergency needs.

Which means that ordinary people cannot go to St. Peter’s Square or the Basilica. And from December 24 to January 7 all kinds of events have to be organized inside the house. The number of guests has also been extremely limited. All programs will be broadcast live on television or over the Internet.
