A court has detained 13 defendants in a case of clashes between police and students in front of the National Press Club for five days. Dhaka’s additional metropolitan magistrate, Muhammad Asaduzzaman Noor, approved the order after a hearing on Monday.

The defendants in remand are Manjurul Alam, Ataur Rahman, Masud Rana, Shafiqul Islam, Shahiraj, Ahsan Habib Bhuiyan Raju, Kabir Hossain, Monowar Islam, Ariful Haque, Anichur Rahman Khandaker Anik, Abu Hayat Md. Zulfiqar, Atif Morshed and Ramzan.

Previously, the detained defendants were brought before the court. Then the Shahbagh Police Case Investigation Officer SI said. Abdullah requested pre-trial detention for 10 days for each accused. On the other hand, the defendant’s lawyers requested the cancellation of the preventive detention and bail. At that time, the Prosecutor’s Office held a hearing in favor of preventive detention. After hearing from both parties, the court granted preventive detention to each of them for five days.

Sources in the case said that on Sunday, protesting students tried to protest in front of the National Press Club without permission to protest the death of writer Mostaq Ahmed in jail and the revocation of Ziaur Rahman’s title. The police request to stop and leave the streets. At that moment they entered the press club and took a position. He started throwing bricks at the police. The police fired tear gas to control the situation. After that, the police and Chhatra Dal leaders and activists began to persecute and confront both groups. Traffic stopped on the road in front of the press club.

Shahbagh SI Palash Shah Police Station filed a case against 200/250 defendants, including 48 defendants.
